M5-M50 Narrow Gauge Modellers – April 2015

Next meeting 25th May

Despite some notable absentees, there were 33 of us at the April Twyning meeting.

Both test tracks were operating and well used. On the 009 track I noticed a nice kit built Baldwin, and also ran my 4 wheel Tomix HM01 chassis which had just arrived from Japan. Its smooth and silent running led to various ideas, including trying a powered ‘gravity train’. The 7mm track hosted, among others, a lovely Welshpool Earl / Countess and train.

The DVD player was available, showing 1960s British narrow gauge films, and we were also treated to Colin Davies’ pictures from his recent visit to India.

Thanks to all who provided and served refreshments, and also to Martyn and Neil for bringing along sales items from Hereford Model Centre and the 7mm association.

Meetings are held on the last Monday of the month, starting at 19-30, at Twyning Village Hall, near Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, GL20 6DE.

The next meetings are on 25th May (Spring Bank Holiday Monday) and 29th June.

Next meeting: Monday 27 April.

Our numbers in March were somewhat depleted, yet 21 people turned up for our usual mix of railway interest and social interaction. As a pre-Easter treat our refreshments included some hot cross buns, which went down well. The attendance of the West Midlands contingent was appreciated, as they’d had a very busy weekend. Our best wishes were sent to one of their group, Lee Allen, who is not at all well, and we hope to see him again soon.

Martyn Davies brought along a selection of new 009 items from Hereford Model Centre which were for sale at discounted prices, and this addition to our meetings appears to be going well. Pre-orders for the new Bachmann Baldwin 009 locos were being taken, again at favourable prices, and several members expressed an interest.

Layout invitations for our Open Day on 10 October 2015 will shortly be sent out and the plans to hold the October 2017 open day at a school in Tewkesbury were discussed again.

You can be assured of a warm welcome at our meetings, in the company of like-minded narrow-gauge enthusiasts, whose interests cover a variety of scales. We meet on the last Monday of the month, our next meetings being on 27 April and 25 May (Bank Holiday), starting at 19.30 hours at Twyning village hall near Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, GL20 6DF. Next meeting: Monday 30 March.

Fortunately our village hall venue is large enough to cope with the growing number of people attending our meetings, 30 this time, though car park space is becoming a problem. Arrive early, seems to be the answer! We welcomed new recruit Roger, and were pleased to see some members who had been absent for a while. Almost half the group had been at Shepton Mallet two days before our meeting, enjoying another excellent show with the best narrow gauge content in south-west England and meeting fellow NG enthusiasts from far and wide.

The preparations for our Open Day on 10 October were discussed again, and a long discussion was held about plans to hold the October 2017 open day at a school in Tewkesbury. There was agreement in principle to develop this proposal though the potential difficulties of a large expansion all in one go were debated.

By the time of our next meeting Spring will have arrived, hopefully with better weather, but in any event you can be assured of a warm welcome at our meetings, in the company of like-minded narrow-gauge enthusiasts. We meet on the last Monday of the month, our next meetings being on 30 March and 27 April, starting at 19.30 hours at Twyning village hall near Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, GL20 6DF. M5-M50 Narrow Gauge Modellers – report 26 January 2015

M5-M50 Narrow Gauge Modellers – report 26 January 2015

Next meeting: Monday 23 February.

Our first meeting of the new year was attended by 30 adults and two juniors, all of whom seemed to be glad to get together after the long break since November. No fewer than three cakes, a whole packet of biscuits and countless cups of coffee were needed to keep everyone refreshed. Thanks go to the providers of the cakes, and the people working in the kitchen. It was good to welcome back several people who had not attended for a while, and we hope to see them again soon, health permitting.

As is now usual, the test tracks were in constant use and the DVD player made a welcome return, providing another source of interest for those without locos to run or once they had done enough socialising – though that hardly seems possible!

Further preparations for our Open Day on 10 October were discussed, and publicity will shortly start to appear on the exhibition circuit, with various group members contributing to the many aspects of planning for a successful event. Plans to hold the October 2017 open day at a school in Tewkesbury are progressing, mostly behind the scenes, but as a much bigger show than a traditional 009 open day is proposed there is a need to start planning early. More details will be announced in due course, but it will still be a narrow-gauge event, in several different scales.

Come rain, snow or freezing cold, you can be assured of a warm welcome at our meetings, in the company of like-minded narrow-gauge enthusiasts. We meet on the last Monday of the month, our next meetings being on 23 February and 30 March, starting at 19.30 hours at Twyning village hall near Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, GL20 6DF.
